Supporting Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve

20 April 2023

Imagine yourself surrounded by 65,000 hectares of naturalised rainforest in Indonesian Borneo. The home of over 55 mammal species on the at-risk of extinction list, including approximately 105,000 orangutans. This is Rimba Raya, a biodiversity reserve our friends at Climate Impact Partners are helping to protect with support from partners like us. We’re committed to an annual investment for the next five years.

Rimba Raya is showing the world it is possible to protect forests, their indigenous wildlife and improve the livelihoods of local communities at the same time.

WHAT THEY DO

Climate

The reserve’s contribution to emission avoidance is the same as removing one million cars from the world’s roads every year for the next 30 years.

  • Across the world, deforestation is happening at the rate of one acre per minute

  • By stopping the deforestation of Rimba Raya to turn it into a palm oil plantation, nearly 130 million tonnes of carbon emissions were avoided

  • Rimba Raya is an InfiniteEARTH Project (created to provide carbon offset solutions)

  • And it’s the first project to have been validated as contributing to all 17 Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations, aiming to tackle everything from extreme poverty and poor sanitation to irresponsible production and the climate crisis

Community

Partnering with local communities to develop solutions that provide sustainable growth of the economy while protecting and preserving limited and vulnerable natural resources.

Supporting initiatives such as

  • Floating health clinic to provide medical assistance to those with limited access

  • Education and literacy programmes

  • Access to clean water supplies

  • Firefighting brigades

  • Recycling initiatives

  • Support for cottage industries, co-ops and community farms

  • Provision of solar powered lanterns and generator systems

The project focuses on training the local population in crop management, such as fruit trees, as well as improved fishing technologies. Also providing education, both in schools and the local community, in agricultural business development, including long-term forest management.

Biodiversity

Rimba Raya protects one of the most highly endangered ecosystems in the world. Providing a buffer zone between palm oil plantations and one of the last remaining wild populations of orangutans on earth.

The biodiversity of Rimba Raya supports the Tanjung Putting National Park, which is home to and protects

  • 300 species of birds

  • 122 species of mammals (including 55 on the at-risk list)

  • 180 species of trees and plants
